Odyssey is for SALE!
The Classic 1938 Sparkman & Stephens S/V Odyssey is now on the market!!
Listed Price: $198,000
The Odyssey, Tacoma’s Tall Ship- a Tacoma mainstay since 1978 as a sea scout training vessel, is now retiring from her years as a Sea Scout Vessel. A rare opportunity to own a piece of US history! This one-of-the-kind Sparkman & Stephens design, built in the Henry Nevins Shipyard in New York— is elegance unsurpassed.
Built in 1938 for Barbara and Barklie Henry, Barbara is the daughter of Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, a descendant of THE Cornelius Vanderbilt. After sailing the waters off the East Coast, making grand trips to Cuba, the Galapagos Islands, and through the Panama Canal, Odyssey went on to proudly serve the US Navy during WWII, and beyond as the USS Saluda. Racing on behalf of the Navy, she even won the 1950 Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race. A valuable and vast history worth restoring and preserving to a capable outfit and buyer with an appreciation of a time-honored gem such as she is.
A current COI (Coast Guard Certificate of Inspection) makes this a great charter or dinner cruise vessel opportunity.
Besides the additions of the new John Deere main engine and new generator in recent years, she was in dry dock between Dec 2022-March 2023 at Haven Boatworks, in Port Townsend where approximately $120,000 of major repairs took place.

Sea Scout Ship Odyssey
The Sea Scout Ship Odyssey began her life in 1938 as a luxury racing yacht, she was commandeered by the US Navy during WWII and since Navy refitted her for their purposes, the original owners didn’t want her back after the war. So she remained in the Navy until 1978 when she was bought by the Pacific Harbors Council of the BSA. Ever since, she has offered a year-round youth sail training program to local youth and offers week-long High Adventure trips in the San Juan Islands for Scout Troops, Venturing Crews and other Sea Scout Ships from around the country. She is a truly unique vessel with an equally unique program and volunteers and we are dedicated to supporting them.
